Liberia 2008
The civil war in Liberia ended in 2003 after 14 years of constant conflict. The final few months of the fighting were particularly intense. Thousands of civilians were forced to flee their homes and were left in desperate need of food, water and medical care.
There is now a fragile peace in the country and aid agencies are helping Liberians to rebuild their lives and live peacefully.
Elections in autumn 2005 resulted in the first female president in Africa, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
