NHS MTS

The NHS Graduate Management Scheme is a fast track development programme within the British National Health Service. It comprises three separate Schemes: General Management, Finance Management and Human Resources Management. The General Managment Scheme is a two-year programme; the first year (September to the following September) consists of orientation to the NHS and up to a year’s operational management placement; the second year starts with a 3 month elective placement between September and December, followed by a 9-month strategic management placement following which ex-trainees usually apply for jobs within the health service or related sectors.

The elective is designed to enhance and build upon all elements of the MTS scheme and usually involves spending time in an organisation outside the NHS or which focuses on a different area of health to the placement organisations. It is used as the basis for an organisational case study which forms the dissertation element of the Masters qualification in Healthcare Leadership and Management undertaken by all General Management trainees.

Trainees are encouraged to set up their own elective placement and project, as this is a unique opportunity for them to design a management or research experience for themselves. Trainees may choose to spend their elective in healthcare organisations overseas, the UK private healthcare sector, local or central government departments, voluntary organisations, the private sector and the national media.

The elective gives trainees the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge that they may not be able to gain otherwise on the Scheme, or at another time in their careers.

And ultimately it should be a great experience!
